12-Year-Old Girl Injured As She Waits For School Bus

Emileigh Gulrud of Virginia Beach is in the hospital recovering from injuries she sustained at the bus stop on October 2, 2013. A Ford Explorer ran a stop sign at the intersection of Aragona and Kellum, colliding with a Toyota Tacoma and pushing the Tacoma onto Emileigh. She is currently in intense pain as she awaits surgery to repair a broken shoulder. Emileigh’s parents were too relieved that their daughter is alive to be angry at the driver. The Explorer driver, whose name was not immediately available, was charged with reckless driving.

Pedestrian accidents

Fatal pedestrian accidents increased in 2011, even as other deaths in motor-vehicle collisions declined. Younger and older victims are also the most susceptible to serious injuries in pedestrian-auto collisions. A Newport News accident attorney can help you recover damages for your lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering, including:

  • Head and neck injuries: Even if the car or truck is moving at a low speed, the sudden impact usually throws the pedestrian several feet. Serious injuries, such as paralysis, can result from very little trauma to the head and neck.
  • Broken bones: The same impact can cause bones to not merely break or crack, but to crumble or shatter. Instead of a few days in a cast, a victim may be faced with one or more corrective surgeries and weeks or months of physical therapy.
